The cutting of your wedding cake

The cutting of your cake is one of the highlights of your wedding day and can be one of the photo opportunity your photographer and friends will want to see.

Here is my top 5 tips to an amazing cutting of the cake.

  1. Not in the corner.

Everyone remembers the film dirty dancing, the amazing dancing, music and will probably be played at your own wedding reception to. One of the lines that is famous is “No one puts baby in the corner” this also applies to your wedding cake, venues and room mangers will more than likely put your cake in the corner of a room or against a wall. WHY? Well they see it as a safe place and it’s out the way, however when you cut the cake not one of your friends can see you as you have your backs to them, the photos will have you all looking back at the camera.

Bring that cake out on the dance floor and stand behind it facing your friends and family this will give a great photo and everyone can see you and that amazing cake.

  1. There are some many traditions that have been forgotten over the years, the true meaning of a wedding cake, why is there three tiers on a wedding Cake?

The top layer is for your first born’s christening or first wedding anniversary, the middle layer is for people to take home and the bottom layer is for eating on the day.

Now just standing there and cutting a cake is very nice, but here are two very nice things you can do are these.

Having two small plates by the cake and two forks, first the husband cuts a small piece from the cake and puts it on a plate and then the wife does the same, now the couple feed each other a piece of cake to each other, the reason for this is it shows their commitment to each other and to provide for each other in the years to come.

Another way is to have the plates as above, the husband takes piece of cake to the wife’s parents and the wife takes a piece to the husband’s parents it’s given to them to say thank you for being part of our day and for all the support.

  1. Have some music while the cake is being cut.

Having a piece of music while you’re getting ready and during the photo opportunity is a great way to let your guest feel the moment and connect with what is happening in the room.

  1. Make room for the professional photographer.

Your photographer is the one that’s going to get the best photos from your day and they know what they are doing, ask your friends and family to wait while you have some photos taken with the professional and ask for flashes to be turned off.

  1. To cut or not to cut?

Nothing could be worse than the words of “where is the knife”? Make sure you have knife for cutting the cake, nothing could be worse than the panic of family’s or venue staff running around trying to find a knife big enough for the job.

Have two just in case one gets lost, give it to the DJ as he or she will be over seeing the moment.

As your DJ, I can handle the cake cutting ceremony, ensuring all of your guests are in position, to make this a memorable moment. Get in touch to discuss your day in greater detail.
